| Built in 1934 during the developement of Jaywick.
It was bought by John Silver. In the 40's from a dance hall it became
a family club. The evenings were for old time dancing whilst the
afternoons found ice-cream and tea served there.
In 1953 the club was used as a reception for the surviviors of the
floods. It was one of the driest places in Jaywick. Volunteers served
hot tea to rescued and rescuers alike.
John Silvers died in the early 60's leaving son Paul the club, he
continued to run it.
It was sold in the 70's as it was going down hill and called a white
elephant. Continuing to change hands it had extentions built but
nothing seemed to work to get it on it's feet again.
This picture sent by Rafaella shows the club in 1970

1980 once again it changed hands, it was re-vamped and re-named the Metro. A chinese resturant and bookies moved on to the premises. It was fairly busy now but nothing like it's heyday. Although putting on a cabaret 7 nights a week the success never lasted long. 1984. Only the chinese resturant was left now, the rest of the place used for storage. A year later the resturant closed and the building left to deteriate. Building constructor Mr Thurstan bought the remains and slowly demolished it.
Part of the false ceiling that was used can now be seen in the Sailor Boy Amusements, St Oysth.
All that remains now is an empty plot of land. |
